SERC is accredited by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) to offer training for renewable energy professions. The trained participants are examined and licensed as qualified technicians by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). The energy field in Kenya suffers a deficiency of skilled personnel qualified to design, install and effectively maintain modern energy systems. SERC is bridging this gap by providing practical oriented, hands-on training courses. To date, more than three thousand technicians have been trained in our programmes at SERC and at cooperating institutes in East and West Africa.

T1/T2 Solar PV Course

This course is the entry point to become a licensed Solar technician or Solar products vendor. The course aims to equip the participants with comprehensive know-how for photovoltaics, hands-on training with technical components, designing optimized PV stand-alone systems and apply for a T2 license from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA)

 

Requirements

 

-KCPE, electrical government trade test 2 and basic Solar training KCSE

-Certificate in electrical or electronic and intermediate Solar training or KCSE

-Diploma in electrical or electronic and intermediate Solar training

-Bsc electrical engineering or relevant degree or higher national diploma

-Good command of MS Word, MS Excel and internet browsing

 

Target Group

 

The course is open but not limited to energy system designers, engineers, installers, project developers, vocational instructors, vendors, O&M technicians, and solar companies.

This course offers comprehensive, technical knowledge for grid tied systems. It provides both classroom taught lectures and hands-on training at our 15kWp PV unit. The practical on-site training on Strathmore’s proprietary 600KWp grid parallel PV system, which is the first one in Kenya with a power purchase agreement (PPA.) Participants will learn the technical planning, design and cost calculations for larger PV systems, installation and safety regulations. After completion, trainees can apply for a T3 license from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

-4 years of verifiable solar installations experience

-Higher national diploma and 2 years of verifiable Solar installation experience.

Solar powered water pumping represents a major achievement for modern water distribution. SERC provides the latest technical equipment and pump controllers, smart remote management and data monitoring. The training will be held at SERC with an installed surface and a submerged water pumping unit. It will involve practical exercises in stand-alone and hybrid (grid or genset backup) configuration to learn the most important operational parameters. Proprietary manufacturer software will be used to design and calculate PV powered pumping and irrigation systems. Participants will receive a completion certificate from SERC after the training.

In Kenya, energy and labour at processing factories account for 55% of the cost of tea production. Firewood is one of the biggest costs with the average tea factory using 20,000 cubic meters of firewood annually, which equates to about 60,000 trees. The majority of processing factories are equipped with old equipment (lighting, furnaces, boilers etc.) and don’t have good energy management policies in place, which means they don’t operate efficiently. This course examines the huge potential to reduce energy consumption, CO2 emissions and operational costs.

 

Course Objective

  • Understanding the requirements of the Energy Management Regulations 2012 and the role of energy committees.
  • Causalities between energy use, global warming and climate change
  • Productive and cost effective use of thermal and electric energy sources by their respective tea factories based on tea factory operators training manual
  • Energy consumption monitoring, cost accounting and benchmarking
  • To carry out walk through audits including elements of general energy audits
  • Tree nurseries and nurturing plants to maturity

Course Delivery
A mixed learning method approach is employed. The main method is through content projection with participants being taken through the contents of the different presentation slides, class demonstrations and skits, flip charts and video playback.

On the last day of the training, the participants take part in a walk-through audit of the host tea factory. The trainees then report their audit findings in a plenary session and any recommendations that the factory can implement so as to address areas where energy is wasted or inappropriately used.

The Solar Powered Cooling and Refrigeration Training provides safe and reliable storage of agricultural goods and food products for remote rural areas with no access to the national electric grid. Our mobile exercise kits and our 2kWp solar-powered cold room offers professional training with practical hands-on course lecturers. The participants will learn how to size, install, and maintain solar-powered cold rooms and refrigeration units and how to efficiently operate them with system monitoring and data logging.

This course is the entry point to gain fundamental knowledge in electricity and solar photovoltaics. The course aims to equip the participants with the theory and practical skills necessary to enter the electrical and solar trade, the Do’s, and Don’ts with electricity, how electricity is generated, transmitted and distributed, electrical wiring at industrial and residential facilities, electrical safety and protection.

 

Target Group


The course is open but not limited to electrical and solar engineers and technicians who desire to acquire more practical hands-on skills. Participants with a basic electrical background are also encouraged to take up the course.

Energy Management has continued to be a major topic in Kenya. Industrial, commercial and institutional facilities can substantially reduce their energy costs through reduction and control of their energy usage. The training is aimed at giving the participants a broad view on the impact of energy efficiency on the environment and business performance of their facilities. Participants will also learn about the available opportunities in their facilities and practical ways of tapping into those opportunities. Also of importance is how to ensure that gains made after implementation of energy conservation measures are sustained. The participants will understand the requirements of all industries consuming more than 180,000kWh of energy per annum as per the Energy Management Regulations of 2012. Evidently, there is need to ensure further compliance through training in energy management to support implementation of energy management measures.
